Keep Pets Safe During Holiday Parties

Holidays are the busiest (and most stressful) days of the year for pets.

Here are a few ways to keep your pets safe before the celebrations begin:

Check your holiday ‘hazards’ before the celebrations start. Move away alcohol, matches, lighter fluids, glow sticks, citronella candles and insect repellents and other chemicals that my be harmful to pets.

BBQ scraps are NOT pet snacks. Fatty foods, bones, corn cobs, onions, grapes, chocolate, xylitol, and alcohol can all be dangerous. Keep food and trash secured, and remind guests not to sneak your pet a treat.

Prep now so your pet can stay calm during the holiday. Gather favorite treats, puzzle toys, blankets, and calming chews (if appropriate). Having everything ready can help reduce stress when the festivities begin.

Double-check gates, fences, and doors. Holiday gatherings mean more people coming and going. Make sure gates latch securely and remind guests to be mindful when entering or leaving so pets don’t slip outside.

Know where to go if there’s an emergency. Save the phone number and address of your nearest emergency veterinary hospital now, it’s much easier to have that information before you need it.

Be sure to update your pet’s ID tag and microchip info.  Pets should have current identification in case they escape from guests opening doors. Check with your veterinarian if you are unsure of your pets microchip information or need an appointment to get them chipped!

A little preparation today can make a big difference tomorrow. Let’s work together to keep every pet safe during the holidays!
