Veterinary CARE Fund & Stories
Reba’s Animal Rescue believes that effectively resourced animal welfare organizations require a supportive community and access to affordable primary, urgent, and emergency veterinary services for all rescued and sheltered animals in need.
Reba’s CARE (Compassionate Animal Rescue Efforts) Fund has been established to provide time-sensitive, tailored veterinary medical care and comprehensive wellness plans for every sheltered animal transferred to our Adoption Center and Foster Care Program.
Reba’s CARE Fund seeks to transform the lives of abandoned and neglected animals by providing them with the veterinary medical care they need to be healthy and the love they deserve to thrive. Your help and financial support are vital to growing our CARE Fund and building a community culture that prioritizes the well-being of rescued and shelter animals in need.
The bond shared with animals and our families is immeasurable. Your gift in any amount to Reba’s CARE Fund ensures that this bond is never broken. Thank you for your generosity and support. It means the world to our animals in need and inspires our Team to change the future of animal rescue and sheltering.

CARE Fund Stories
Timmy’s Journey
Every minute is crucial when animals suffering from abuse and neglect need our help. Timmy arrived at Reba’s Animal Adoption Center after being transferred from a rural county facility. Timmy was a neglect case, having lived for months tied up outside, forgotten in a yard, and being fed so little that his body showed severe signs of starvation. Reba’s took the crucial step of providing him with the continued veterinary care he needed in preparation for adoption.
Reba’s Veterinary CARE Fund provides essential wellness care, including vaccinations, microchips, preventatives, spay/neuter surgeries, and urgent, specialist, and emergency care for our most complicated cases.
Our CARE Fund is a game-changing resource that transforms the lives of countless animals like Timmy, providing them with the medical care they need to alleviate pain and avoid needless suffering. Every companion animal deserves the opportunity to live a healthy life and find a loving forever home.
Timmy got his chance and was adopted in February 2024. His new name is Champ, and he truly lives up to it!
Button’s Journey
Sometimes the things we treasure most become worn and tattered, but we hold onto them because they are so dear to our hearts. This sweet girl named Button was transferred to Reba’s Animal Rescue in partnership with Chesapeake Animal Services after her owner passed away. She needed a loving home and financial support through Reba’s CARE Fund for corrective surgery to properly close the eye socket that held a damaged eye.
Button was very shy and scared. We placed her in a foster home where she accidentally slipped through the fence. Button was lost for seven days, but kind neighbors provided food and water, keeping her in adjoining neighborhoods. Fortunately, the neighborhood carefully watched her until we could set a trap with the help of Suffolk Animal Care. After multiple sightings, our tiny little girl was successfully trapped and returned to Reba’s. We were overjoyed to have her back and are grateful to the community for keeping her safe.
To help Button start to overcome her shyness, she spent several nights at our team members’ homes. Button enjoyed quiet time with children, adults, and other pets, helping her come out of her shell. Not long after, her perfect adopter came to visit her at our Adoption Center, and there was an instant connection. Button’s eye surgery has been scheduled, and with the love of her new mom and support provided through Reba’s CARE Fund, Button’s journey has a bright future ahead, giving her back the companionship she had longed for and a new forever home.
Spud’s Journey
An unplanned visit by our Executive Director turned into the rescue of Spud, a five-week-old Coonhound puppy suffering from “puppy strangles.” He was the only pup affected in a litter of 10 surrendered to our partners at Chesapeake Animal Services. Reba’s transferred Spud to give him a fighting chance and the additional care he needed.
Juvenile cellulitis, also known as puppy strangles or juvenile pyoderma, is an uncommon disease in dogs. It shows symptoms like dermatitis, lethargy, depression, and lameness. Many cases of strangles can be life-threatening if left untreated. Strangles usually affect young dogs between 3 weeks to 6 months.
The treatment of juvenile cellulitis relies on suppressing the immune system to stop the auto-immune reaction. Prednisone (a steroid) is the most often used drug, and it is typically administered over several weeks before being gradually tapered.
Contributions in any amount to Reba’s CARE Fund support essential care and life-saving medications like prednisone – the treatment needed to heal rare cases like Spud.
Spud was cared for in a foster home for several weeks, where he was closely monitored and loved without measure. Foster volunteers are Reba’s lifeline. Our foster care program extends our ability to care for more animals while they wait for space in our Adoption Center. Growing up strong, Spud has a clean bill of health and has been adopted.
